This first book of the The Well Tempered Clavier summarises everything that Jean- Sébastien Bach was : a man who loved life in all its forms. Jubilation, tenderness, love, passions, hopes, regrets.. every human emotion is inscribed in his music. Without doubt his Christian faith and his profound respect for the Creator formed a framework not to be ignored. But this aspect of his personality does sometimes give him a reputation of austerity, which the love in his acts and his writing strongly deny. Even his Passions, heavily marked by the sufferings imposed by the cross, allow us a glimpse of the sky, to reassure us that at the end there will be the Resurrection.

What composer has the presence of mind to travel so profoundly through the centuries without ageing at all himself ? However we interpret his notes, whether as jazz, or on electric guitar or modern concert piano, the composition is of such a perfection that all is coherent. Nothing can dull his work - and that’s where the miracle is !

The preludes and the fugues, indissociable as they are, must showcase the temperament of the piece. That is to say, teach tone having the same chances of autonomy to express their character. A good occasion then for Bach to amuse himself by multiplying all the possible combinations that his creative genius dictates to him. He juggles with voices, subjects, canons, counterpoints, inversions, rises.. anything and everything that can be done with a fugue, he does. Each time, the prelude and the fugue form a duo, and yet each recount their own story. It’s like a book of short stories that we devour so that we can discover the end !

As Debussy did later on, we can give a title to each duo, once the reading is complete. In this way, each interpreter can play his part in recreating what the composer so carefully created. Though of course with Bach, in this indestructible architecture, there will always live artistic freedom.
